Stockport Heritage Trust is run solely by volunteers who are all working to preserve our local history.

We have a small Heritage Centre in St. Mary's Parish Church on the Market Place, which houses our large local picture collection, changing exhibitions, shop and advice from volunteers if we can help!
We also provide exhibitions, talks, walks around the Borough, and published research projects.

St. Mary's c.1870

Stockport Heritage Trust formed in 1986 and became a registered charity (no. 700124)  the following year, to save the unique Fifteenth Century Staircase House (also on the Market Place) from demolition. After many years of hard work by Trust members, Stockport Council finally took on the project, resulting in the award-winning museum you can visit today.

The Staircase by local artist Beryl Baguley

Having raised money over the years for Staircase House, we were delighted to provide a handcarved tester bed, now on display.

To compliment this, we have also funded the establishment of a local group of embroiderers - the 'Staircase Stitchers' who are working on elaborate bed hangings and other authentic replica items for the House.

We have a voice on many local committes and development initiatives, helping put YOUR views forward to 'the powers that be'!
