Jacqueline Lacey working in Staircase House
This complex cross stitch is extremely time consuming, and looks amazing so far! Eventually it is intended to cover a coffer or chest in the Dowry Room.

Raised Work

Raised beadwork by Kathleen Hartley
The leopard and lion pictured here will be part of a large frame around a mirror. They are made up of lots of tiny individual beads, being put together in layers.

The Lion is now in one piece, and both are just waiting for their eyes!
Gold Work
Kathleen has also started some very fine work in gold. The pieces seem even more difficult to work with than the tiny beads.
Samplers
Samplers were an excellent way for little girls to practice their embroidery, and most houses would have one on display. They could also show biblical texts (as in this example) or poems stitched by adults as well as children.
